Why do you need a second email address?
Google Play and TestFlight add testers by the account signed in on the device, not by where you read email. For Android that’s the Google account in the Play Store. For iPhone and iPad it’s your Apple ID. If the address doesn’t match the account on the device, the invite won’t work. It’s fine if it’s the same as your contact email.
I can’t find BetterSign in the Play Store.
It’s visible only to listed testers. Open the opt-in link from your invite first, and make sure the Play Store is using the Google account you gave us (tap your profile picture to switch). New testers can take a few hours to get access. If it still doesn’t appear, reply to your invite and we’ll check the list.
Do I need anything special for iPhone or iPad?
Yes: an Apple ID and Apple’s free TestFlight app. iOS and iPadOS test builds are only available through TestFlight. Accept the invite on your device, sign in to TestFlight with the Apple ID you gave us, and install from there. TestFlight shows when a build expires and lets you send feedback and screenshots straight to us.
What should I test, and how do I report problems?
We’ll suggest a few things to try, like creating an identity, signing in, adding a contact, messaging, and backup. Beyond that, use it however you like. Report anything that’s broken, slow, or confusing: what you did, what you expected, and what happened. Screenshots and screen recordings help a lot. On iOS you can send feedback from TestFlight. Otherwise, reply to your invite email.
Will my test identity carry over to the release?
It can, if you want it to. We’ll provide a process to migrate your alpha identity to later builds and to the public release, and we’ll email testers the steps before you need them. If you’d rather start fresh, you can.
⚠ Uninstalling deletes your identity. Your identity’s private keys live only on your device, sealed in its secure hardware. We don’t keep a copy, so we can’t restore it for you. By default, any of these permanently deletes your identity:
- Uninstalling the BetterSign app
- Clearing the app’s data or storage
- Factory-resetting, replacing, or losing the device
Once it’s gone it can’t be recovered. Contacts who verified you will see a new identity if you create another one.
To keep your identity during the alpha:
- Update, don’t reinstall. Install new builds over the top from Google Play or TestFlight. Updating keeps your data, and uninstalling first doesn’t.
- If a TestFlight build expires, install the newer build from TestFlight. Don’t delete the app.
- Before you switch or reset a device, use the migration steps once we’ve sent them. Until then, expect to start over on the new device.
- Read the release notes. Some alpha builds may need a reset to change data formats. We’ll warn you clearly before any build that does.
- Treat it as a test identity. Don’t use it for anything you can’t afford to lose until migration is available.
Can I share the build or the invite?
Please don’t. This is an internal test, so keep builds, invite links, and package names to yourself. If someone else wants to help, send them to this page.
What is the AOSP checkbox for?
Some people run Android without Google Play services, on AOSP-based or de-Googled ROMs. Those devices can’t use Play Store testing. Tick the box if that’s you, or if you’d like to help test BetterSign on AOSP, and we’ll follow up separately.
How do I leave the test?
Leave the program from the opt-in link on Android, or from TestFlight on iOS, then uninstall the app. Uninstalling permanently deletes your identity, so migrate it first if you want to keep it. To delete your signup details too, email contact@cryptid.tech.
